AI & agents / practical guide

AI Chat Widget Messg™

Small interface. Carefully defined answers.

Bring AI assistance into a website only after defining what the assistant can answer, where its evidence comes from, and how the visitor reaches a person.

a little clarity goes a long way
Think through the important parts

Three decisions to make first.

Decision 01

Scope the answer space

Choose a narrow body of approved information and a clear audience. A documentation assistant should not silently become an account-support agent with access to unrelated records.

Decision 02

Make limits readable

An uncertain answer needs a useful next step, not an elaborate illusion of confidence. Decide how the interface presents source context, missing information, and a human contact route.

Decision 03

Combine answer and interface testing

Evaluate the text and the widget behavior together. A correct answer is still difficult to use if the panel steals focus, hides the contact route, or makes long responses unreadable on a phone.

Put the plan into practice

A useful starting sequence.

  1. Define the permitted knowledge and audience.
  2. Test answer quality alongside keyboard behavior.
  3. Provide a human route for unresolved questions.
Keep the boundary clear

What not to assume.

Do not advertise guaranteed accuracy, unrestricted account access, or autonomous actions without evidence. A retrieval-based answer assistant and an action-taking agent require different controls.

For a practical review, describe the intended audience, the information crossing each boundary, and the person responsible when the ordinary path fails.

A closer look

One useful question.

Should the widget answer every question?

No. An answer boundary helps keep the assistant useful. Outside that boundary, explain the limitation and point to a relevant resource or human contact instead of filling the gap with an invented answer.
